JULY 11: Musée de Cluny

Today we visited the the Musée de Cluny (Cluny Museum). The Musée de Cluny was built in the Middle Ages and showcases a wide variety of relics. Within the museum there are sculptures, tapestries, and random bits from the Middle Ages.

The first few rooms that you enter show different sculptures, pieces of pottery, and other relics.

One sculpture I found interesting was of Mary. The sculpture shows her reading but her body it twisted as she turns around and her face is of acceptance as an angel has come to speak with her.

Further in there are some stain glass windows in several small rooms all over. Each window telling different stories either from the Old Testament or of kings. One such window showed the Messiah carrying a cross and wearing the Crown of Thorns.

One of the very important show stoppers were of the stone heads from Notre-Dame. There is a total of 21 heads all from the 1200s. The heads were part of the sculpted Kings of Judah. The reason they were removed from their bodies was due to a misunderstanding in 1793. An angry revolutionary mob mistook them for kings of France and beheaded them. Lucky someone collected the heads and buried them in their backyard. They stayed there until 1977 when they were discovered and now stand on display.

Another major show piece were the tapestries of the Lady and the Unicorn. There are a total of 6 tapestries all designed before A.D. 1500 by an a unknown artist. The unicorn is meant to represent the Messiah in religion. The bottom of the tapestries have an off color compared to the rest as there were unsuccessful attempts to preserve the tapestries.

Overall the museum is very amazing with its Middle Ages history and not to long for those who enjoy a shorter trip to a museum.
