For today we kept up the trend of visiting churches and visited La Basilique de St-Denis named after St Denis, who was also known as Dionysius. Legend has it that when St Denis was executed he proceeded to pick up his head and carry it to the spot he wanted his grave to be, the exact spot of where the church stands today. The church itself lacks a north tower unlike the others due to a fire demolishing and never having a solid reconstruction of it.
Inside the church lays the marked graves of many kings, queens, princes, and princesses. Sadly not all the remains are there due to the Terror of 1793 were major ransacks of the church took place. The remains were taken and thrown into a pit together. Many pieces though were saved and returned to the church.
As with the the other churches there were very beautiful stain glass windows. Though many of the original had been destroyed the remakes were just as beautiful as the rest of the original pieces.
The hall (nave) was a very big set up ready for mass that was bathed in amazing colors due to the windows. The doors we used to enter the hall had magnificent carvings in them, making them very welcoming.
The whole place was very beautiful. It would be a perfect place for anyone to visit. There is even a video that you can watch in multiple languages there that tells of some of the history and reconstruction of some pieces in the church that are definitely worth anyone's time.
On a side note there are plenty of wonderful pâtisserie shops you can visit either there or on your way back. I happen to stop over by Denfert Rochereau with a friend for a few sweet pieces.
